            Respected by the Tathagata,

            and

Loved by theTathagata;

            thus

We are enabled to believe in the Tathagata truly.

                ……………………………………………………………………

A young man A was arrested for several burglaries and
homicides. Hearing this news, a blind nembutsu priest N
offered an interview with him in the police. In no time
prisoner A came out. N: “Come nearer, nearer to me,”
as if for their knees to touch. Reaching his hands,
N
stroked A’s face, saying, “Young,” and then coming
down to A’s neck, shoulder, and then suddenly hugged
his body strongly, calling to his ear, “You are the
Tathagata’s child.!”

That night A could not get a sleep. A few days later,
he proposed to the warden, “Give me a trial quickly.
I need no counsels. Give me a death sentence. Only let
me say one thing afterwards.”

After the sentence was given, A exclaimed, “I haven’t
heard about my birth at all.  I was a deserted child.  At
school I was bullied as a parent-less kid, and suspected
of various mischiefs. This drove me to wrong doings, and
finally came here. But the other day when I was hugged
for the first time in my life, I felt the warmth of a human
heart!”

It is not a trial, but a compassion that saves human beings.
